Counselling & Qualifications

What qualifications should a counsellor have?

Our counsellors have completed both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in counselling, are registered with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), and engage in continuous professional development to ensure they provide the highest quality support.

What does a counsellor do?

A counsellor provides a safe, confidential space where you can talk about personal challenges, mental health concerns, or life transitions. They offer guidance and coping strategies but do not diagnose conditions, assess for neurodivergence, or prescribe medication.

Do I need a referral to see a counsellor?

No, you don’t need a referral! You can book directly with a private counsellor or through an organisation.

What’s the difference between a counsellor, psychologist, and psychiatrist?

  • Counsellors focus on holistic, client-led therapy tailored to your unique needs.

  • Psychologists provide therapy and diagnose mental health conditions but do not prescribe medication.

  • Psychiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat mental health conditions, often using medication.

Sessions & Fees

How much does a counselling session cost?

Our fee for an individual 55-minute session is $140. You can find more pricing details at www.wyldecounsel.com/makeabooking. If you’re experiencing financial hardship, let us know—we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Is counselling at Wylde Counsel covered by Medicare?

Counsellors at Wylde Counsel are unable to accept MHCP’s, however, if you are struggling financially we are open to discussing a session price that is feasible for the season you are in. Counselling is only covered by Medicare when provided by a registered psychologist or mental health social worker under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP).

Do you offer private health rebates?

Our counsellors do not provide private health insurance rebates. If this is important to you, the ACA or PACFA websites can help you find counsellors who do.

Do you offer bulk billing or concessions?

Some of our counsellors provide discounted rates for those facing financial hardship. Please ask about available options when booking.

How long is a counselling session?

A standard session is 55 minutes, but we can discuss different session lengths if needed.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies based on your goals. Some people find 4–6 sessions helpful, while others prefer ongoing support.

Confidentiality & Privacy

Is everything I say in a session confidential?

Yes—confidentiality is a fundamental part of counselling. However, there are legal exceptions, such as if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others or if disclosure is required by law.

Will my information be shared with anyone?

No, unless you provide written consent or there’s a legal obligation (e.g., child protection concerns).
